Summit Pacific Celebrates First Family Medicine Residents to Graduate in Grays Harbor County

(ELMA, WA) – Summit Pacific Medical Center celebrated its graduation of the first class of rural Family Medicine Residents in Grays Harbor County by recognizing two newly board-certified family physicians, Dr. Rabab Cheema and Dr. Roy Miller, on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. Dr. Rabab Cheema and Dr. Roy Miller were awarded certificates for their success in completing Summit Pacific’s rural family medicine training program. “This is an outstanding accomplishment for the two physicians, and an important milestone to celebrate for our community as Summit Pacific continues to develop more access to local healthcare,” stated Shawn Andrews, MD, Senior Medical Director of Ambulatory Services and Family Medicine Program. Dr. Cheema and Dr. Miller are the first two residents to receive their training from a residency program in Grays Harbor County, making this inaugural commencement particularly special for the community.

According to Dr. Andrews, “Both physicians feel well-prepared to care for patients in their first post-residency jobs, and we are so proud of them. They helped us shape the program through direct solution-focused feedback, creativity, and commitment to excellence. We are also grateful to our Summit Pacific Administrative team, Board of Commissioners, residency leadership team, medical staff office, clinic leadership team and caregivers, core and adjunct faculty, and especially everyone across Summit Pacific’s care locations and at Providence St. Peter Hospital for their commitment to teaching and to helping our residency program grow.”

Marcus Heisler, MD, served as keynote speaker, and recognized the history of Summit Pacific, previously known as Mark E. Reed Memorial Hospital, and the historical significance of the first graduating class. Also honored at the celebration were the second-year residents Dr. Deborah Bergeron and Dr. Mariel Chan, and the third-year residents Dr. Bethany Healey and Dr. Mackie Chan. Introduced were the fourth-year residents and the newest additions to the team, Dr. Adam McLeod and Dr. Harish Sharma. Chief Medical Officer Ken Dietrich, MD, credited the Summit Pacific family residency team and staff for the beautifully orchestrated event commemorating the remarkable achievements.

Summit Pacific Medical Center is an ACGME- Accredited Family Medicine Residency Program affiliated with an established core program at Providence St. Peter Hospital in nearby Olympia, Washington. Residents are specially trained to lead interprofessional health teams, care for the needs of all patients, and serve the healthcare needs of the rural community.  Residents work alongside Summit Pacific’s community-based, experienced family medicine faculty as an integral part of an interprofessional healthcare team to provide care for the culturally diverse, rurally located, and often underserved patient population in Grays Harbor County.
