Laura Armstrong, MD, FAAFP, DIPABLM
Program Director
Laura Armstrong grew up in the small town of Socorro, New Mexico. She attended Rice University in Houston, Texas and attended medical school at UT Houston, now known as McGovern Medical School. After medical school, Laura completed her residency in Family Medicine at Memorial Residency Program in Sugar Land, Texas. She worked in private practice before returning to her passion in medical education in 2013 and has been a part of Summit Pacific since 2023.
She enjoys caring for newborns, their parents and grandparents all in the context of lifelong healthy living. Her interests include women’s health, nutrition, mindfulness, lifestyle medicine and integrative medicine. Laura has held leadership roles in newborn care and has served as the medical director for the Nurse Health Line in Houston. She is board certified in Integrative Medicine as well as Lifestyle Medicine. She is passionate about physician education and wellness.
Laura is married with three rambunctious children. She enjoys gardening, hiking, tai chi, and enjoys most mediums of art including painting, quilting, jewelry making, and alcohol ink art. She also likes to swim, dance and read science fiction in her spare time. Laura formerly organized a community garden and is a certified yoga instructor.
Mandy Achterman, DO, MPH
Associate Program Director, Osteopathic Lead
Dr. Achterman is a native to the Northwest; she was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Following high school, she received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Spanish from Macalester College. She holds a Master’s in Public Health, International with an emphasis in maternal infant health and community education and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences.
She enjoys a broad scope of care including pregnancy and childbirth services, pediatric and adult medicine, and osteopathic manipulative therapy. She is fluent in Spanish and living for a time in rural Mexico has uniquely prepared her to build trust and deliver culturally responsive care to Hispanic families locally. She also enjoys shaping the next generation of rural healthcare providers, serving as the Associate Program Director for the Summit Pacific Family Medicine residency.
In her free time, Dr Achterman enjoys spending time at home in her garden, baking, finishing old needlework projects, and spending time with family/friends and her two dogs, Ramona and Lucy.
Sara Gay
Program Coordinator
Sara is originally from Southwest Louisiana. After high school, she attended McNeese State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business. After 15 years of managing Biogeochemistry Research Laboratories at Louisiana State University and The University of Central Florida, Sara decided it was time for a career shift. She moved to the Pacific Northwest in the fall of 2024 and began her journey at Summit Pacific where she served as a Program Specialist in the Gastroenterology clinic. Sara enjoys spending time on the farm with her family and animals, paddleboarding the river, and doing jigsaw puzzles.
Shawn Andrews, MD, FAAFP, HALM
Core Faculty, Senior Medical Director for Ambulatory Care Services, Former Program Director
Dr. Andrews was born and raised in rural Wahkiakum County before attending Seattle Pacific University. She received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1994. She then moved to Olympia, WA to begin her family medicine residency with the St. Peter Family Medicine Residency Program, graduating in 1997.
Dr. Andrews has been practicing lifespan Family Medicine (including Family Medicine OB care) in Elma since 1997. She has been adjunct faculty with St. Peter Family Medicine since 1997, and has also hosted Family Medicine residents and students for rotations in Elma throughout her time in Elma. She previously served as Family Medicine Residency Program Director, and now serves as core faculty and the Sr. Medical Director of Ambulatory Care Services. She enjoys all aspects of primary care, especially long-term continuity relationships with patients, treating the whole family, and making care accessible to everyone, especially those who feel estranged from the healthcare system.
Outside of the office, Dr. Andrews enjoys time with family (including lots of animals), gardening, cooking, crafting, SCUBA diving and jigsaw puzzles.
Jordan Snell, DO
Core Faculty
Jordan Snell grew up in rural Nebraska before moving to Colorado for undergraduate and medical school. He graduated from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed Family Medicine residency in Washington with Providence St. Peter’s Chehalis Rural Training Program.
Jordan feels strongly about making excellent care accessible to underserved communities and has a particular interest in palliative and hospice medicine. He practices as a hospitalist and serves as the Associate Director of Acute Care, as well as supervising residents there in both the hospital and clinic. He lives in Chehalis, WA with his wife and three children.
Janelle Wortman, PharmD
Adjunct Faculty
Dr. Janelle Wortman, a Pacific Northwest native, is dedicated to enhancing team-based medicine to further the delivery of high-quality healthcare to our rural communities. After graduating with a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from the University of Washington, Janelle then went on to complete two years of residency where she specialized in family medicine (Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center – Hillsboro, OR and Providence St. Peter – Chehalis, WA).
As a champion of evidence-based medicine, Janelle will be involved in resident scholarly activity requirements, journal clubs, and didactic teaching. Situated within the family medicine clinic, she is often available for impromptu consults and warm handoffs. Janelle manages her own patient panel under collaborative practice agreements with our team and welcomes residents for shadowing opportunities.
When not reading primary literature, she is an avid rock climber and paddleboarder and relishes time spent outside in the beautiful backyard of Western Washington.
Johanna Thompson, PharmD, BCGP
Adjunct Faculty, Clinical Pharmacy
Dr. Johanna Thompson grew up in Montesano, Washington. She earned her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Hillsdale College in Michigan and later a PharmD from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. She completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center St. Margaret and then moved to Utah for a PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at University of Utah.
Johanna has worked with Intermountain Health as an Advanced Clinical Pharmacist and as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in primary care for Providence. She has taken a special interest in geriatric medicine and is board certified in geriatric pharmacotherapy. She is passionate about deprescribing medications in older adults and helping patients successfully manage their medications. She also has an interest in osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction, as well as teaching and mentoring pharmacy and medical students and residents.
In her spare time, she often enjoys the outdoors – skiing, mountain biking, hiking, or running. She enjoys trying new things and has recently branched out into pickleball and swing dancing. She also enjoys spending time with her family members, roughhousing with her nieces and nephews whenever possible.
Greg Hannabas, MD, MPH, MPA
Adjunct Faculty, Geriatrics
Dr. Hannabas is a transplant to the Pacific Northwest. Joining Summit Pacific from rural Texas, where he was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle, he grew up farming. His appreciation for complex relationships and community dynamics birthed his curiosity to pursue his Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He completed his education and training at Texas Tech University (TTU), including both a Master’s in Public Health and a Master’s in Public Administration, with studies focusing on health care system analysis in comparative cost and delivery. He completed his Doctorate in Medicine at TTUHSC Lubbock with a certificate in Medical Ethics and Humanities.
His passion for the underserved, vulnerable populations began working in a soup kitchen serving chronologically achieved (>65yo) individuals, leading him to one day complete a fellowship in Geriatrics.
He came to Grays Harbor not only drawn to help Summit Pacific meet the needs of its communities but to balance his time with hiking, fishing, and outdoor activities available, sitting at the doorway to the Olympic National Park.
His plus-1 is his precious dog Potter, and Dr. Hannabas likes to take him along to home visits that he will occasionally do as part of his care. He enjoys reading and poetry and has a passion for the importance of language and communication, which he considers an undervalued procedure performed in primary care.
Angela Shimoda, MD
Full-Scope Family Medicine, Community Preceptor
Dr. Angela Shimoda grew up in Denver, Colorado. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Minneapolis before returning to Colorado to attend medical school at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
While getting her medical degree in Denver, she became very involved with the local free clinic and continues to be committed to working with the underserved in her community. She is specifically interested in obstetrics, women’s care, lifestyle medicine, and full-spectrum family practice.
In her free time, Dr. Shimoda loves to spend time outside hiking or snowboarding, reading, and spending time with her friends, family, and dog.
Marc Hartung, DO
Family Medicine, Community Preceptor
Dr. Hartung holds a Bachelor of Science degree from The Evergreen State College and a Doctorate in Osteopathy from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences. He is a passionate and intellectual individual who specializes in Osteopathy. He believes that patient education is an essential aspect of medicine.
When not treating patients, Dr. Hartung can often be found scaling mountains as an alpine climber, navigating rugged terrain on his mountain bike, conquering trails with his running shoes, or catching the perfect wave while surfing.
Ken Dietrich, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Ken Dietrich comes to Summit Pacific Medical Center with extensive knowledge in both medicine and administration. Prior to accepting the CMO role, Dr. Dietrich spent a year and a half working in SPMC’s Emergency Department. Dr. Dietrich is excited about Summit Pacific’s vision statement and realizes that Grays Harbor is an underserved area. His work at Summit Pacific will include evaluating systems, developing services, and working with our providers to ensure they have the resources they need to provide great care. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has worked in critical care medicine for more than 34 years. He served as a pediatric critical care physician at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma for 26 years.
Mimi Syed, DO
Emergency Medicine Faculty
Dr. Syed is Summit Pacific’s Emergency Department Medical Director and is the Clinical Assistant Professor at WSU School of Medicine and UW School of Medicine. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. There she would train and work in Emergency Medicine and serve as an Assistant Emergency Medical Director before coming to Washington State. She is passionate about Emergency Medicine and enjoys running, gardening and rescuing animals in her spare time.
Amir Atabeygi, MD
Adjunct Faculty
Dr. Atabeygi grew up in Vancouver, BC, Canada. His medical education was obtained in Grenada, the United Kingdom and the United States. He received his doctorate from St. George’s University on the island of Grenada. He is passionate about finding solutions to medical concerns and finds enjoyment working with patients of all ages.
Before making the change to medicine, Dr. Atabeygi worked as a high school science and math teacher.
He has a deep love for rugby and played the game for over 20 years. When at home he enjoys his time with family and completing various woodworking projects.
Yue Teng, MD
Adjunct Faculty
Dr. Teng has over 20 years of experience practicing medicine. He has worked as the Director of Clinic Quality and Associate Director of Curriculum at Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation. He was also the lead faculty for Clinical QI and scholarly activity at St. Peter Family Medicine.
Dr. Teng grew up in China and completed his medical schooling there. He finished his Family Medicine Residency in Iowa. He believes in full-spectrum family medicine and his passion is finding caring and efficient ways to provide care.
In his free time, Dr. Teng enjoys biking, fishing, and has recently picked up skiing.
Marcus Heisler, MD, MPH
Dr. Heisler joined Summit Pacific Medical Center in 2018 drawn by its mission founded on commitments to service and health equity and with a focus on prevention. He attended medical school at Loma Linda University where he also received a Masters of Public Health with an emphasis in Population Medicine. He is board-certified in both Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine and has special interests in population health, lifestyle medicine, chemical dependency, and medical education. He enjoys taking care of his patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings as one of SPMC’s hospitalists and primary care providers. He is passionate about preventing and treating chronic diseases with evidence-based lifestyle medicine and behavior change tools and enjoys partnering with his patients through their health journeys.
Originally a California transplant, he has made Washington his home. He is an amateur vegetable gardener and rock climber. He and his wife enjoy the countless outdoor adventure opportunities the PNW has to offer.
