March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March 2, 2026

Approximately 50,000 people die each year from colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and one in 25 Americans will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. There were an estimated 153,000 Americans diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023.

Fortunately, with screening for colon cancer, rates have slowed, but it was still estimated that 52,000 people died from colorectal cancer in 2023. Although you cannot completely prevent colorectal cancer, you can greatly decrease your risk by knowing potential symptoms, completing regular screenings, and making lifestyle changes.

Potential signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer listed by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) include:

  • A change in bowel habits.
  • Blood in or on your stool (bowel movement).
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or feeling that the bowel does not empty all the way.
  • Abdominal pain, aches, or cramps that do not go away.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Here are some things you can do to lower your risk for colorectal cancer:

Keep up with your colorectal cancer screening: Screening is the most effective way to prevent and detect colorectal cancer early.  Although several screening methods exist, colonoscopy remains the gold standard. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that the average adult be regularly screened for colorectal cancer between the ages of 45 and 75.

Depending on your risk factors, some people may need earlier and more frequent screenings, so talk to your provider about when you should be screened and which test is best for you.

Avoid tobacco and significant alcohol consumption.

Regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight: Exercise not only lowers your risk of heart disease, but also lowers your risk of colon cancer.

Eat more fruits and vegetables: A high fiber and low-fat diet that avoids processed meats is best for your colon.
