Getting outside, even in the rain, and walking will not only burn calories but also help your mood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise (the level of a brisk walk) per week for good heart health.
If you feel Jack Frost nipping on your nose, you’re at risk for hypothermia, your body temperature dropping below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and frostbite, the freezing of body tissues. Protect yourself by wearing warm clothes, with your innermost layer made of a wicking material that draws moisture away from your body. Make sure you keep sensitive body parts like your fingers and face covered in extreme cold. Finally, keep yourself dry and bring plenty of blankets, coats, hats, and gloves if you have to cross a mountain pass.
Vegetables are not only a great source of fiber and vitamins, but they also fill you up, making you less likely to overeat. Decreasing your portion size by not allowing different foods to touch will reduce your calories and give your stomach time to feel full.
The holiday blues might be a sign of seasonal affective disorder, depression, and other symptoms that occur in seasonal patterns. With the short days and rain, we can be particularly vulnerable to SAD in the Pacific Northwest. You can reduce your risk of SAD by going outside regularly, since most ultraviolet rays can penetrate the clouds. If you are feeling down and depressed, talk to your provider about light therapy, medications, and counseling.
