SUMMIT PACIFIC RECEIVES QUALITY-BASED ACCREDITATION FROM DNV

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March 3, 2025

Approximately 50,000 people die each year from colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and one in 25 Americans will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetimes, according to the American Cancer Society. In fact, over 140,000 Americans were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2021, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Regardless of background or family history, everyone needs to make a plan to get screened for colorectal cancer because early detection is crucial. Since colorectal cancer often doesn’t show symptoms until advanced stages, regular screening procedures such as colonoscopies could save your life.

Potential signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer listed by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) include:

  • A change in bowel habits.
  • Blood in or on your stool (bowel movement).
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or feeling that the bowel does not empty all the way.
  • Abdominal pain, aches, or cramps that don’t go away.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Here are some things you can do to lower your risk for colorectal cancer:

  • Keep up with your colorectal cancer screening:  Screening is the most effective way to prevent and detect colorectal cancer.  Although there are several screening methods, colonoscopy remains the gold standard.  The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends the average adult be regularly screened for colorectal cancer between the ages of 45 to 75.  Depending on your risk factors, some people require earlier and more frequent screenings, so talk to your provider about when you should be screened and what test is best for you.
  • Avoid tobacco and significant alcohol consumption.
  • Regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight: Exercise lowers your risk for not only heart disease but also colon cancer.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables.  A high-fiber, low-fat diet that avoids processed meats is best for your colon.
