STEM Planning Tour to Educate the Future Generation of Healthcare Workers

(ELMA, WA) – Summit Pacific Medical Center hosted a campus tour on August 24, 2023, for the faculty of Elma School District in collaboration with their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Career Connection Day. Educators of local students observed healthcare in action while gathering information to develop the next generation of workers.

“It was very exciting to see so many dedicated teachers on the Summit Pacific Campus. The partnership between schools and healthcare is more critical than ever as we work together to improve the future wellbeing of our community and assure an adequate healthcare work force for Grays Harbor County,” states Dr. Kevin Caserta, Senior Medical Director of Population Health.

Tours of Summit Pacific’s Medical and Wellness Centers highlighted healthcare careers in various departments such as Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency Department, Business Office, and Physical Therapy. Each tour stop focused on occupations in the department and how STEM concepts align and are used regularly in each job.

The campus tour concluded with presentations from nine Summit Pacific leaders and providers, giving more in-depth information that touched on different areas of knowledge and credentials that are needed in each vocation. The goal of the tour was to provide local teachers with current information to educate the community’s youth on a full array of healthcare career opportunities as students prepare to join the workforce.

“These students are our future providers, clinicians, or even IT & Informatics staff members working to build the healthiest community in the Nation,” states Tracy Kateley, Director of Health Information and Technology Systems. “This tour demonstrated the commitment of our local educators to career readiness for youth, and the partnership between Elma School District and Summit Pacific Medical Center will continue to encourage students to fully explore the many careers offered in healthcare.”
